Preparation and Properties of Aluminum Borate-Potassium Hexatitanate Whisker Composite Thermal Insulation Materials

Abstract: Aluminum borate-potassium hexatitanate whisker composite thermal insulation materials were prepared by solid-state sintering with boric acid, aluminum hydroxide and potassium hexatitanate whiskers (PTW) as main raw materials. The effects of pre-synthesized aluminum borate whisker (ABW) on microstructure, mechanical and thermal insulation properties of the materials were studied. The results show that, with the increase of preparation temperature, ABW and PTW change from point contact to whisker through K1.5(Al1.5Ti6.5)O16 bonding phase, resulting in the increase of density and compressive strength of the composite thermal insulation materials. Fine ABW forms smaller pores between PTW, which significantly improves the thermal insulationproperty of the composite thermal insulation materials by reducing convection and radiation heat transfer. As for the composite insulation materials prepared at 1 100 ℃ by controlling PTW, pre-synthesized ABW and carbon black mass ratio of 9∶1∶3, the bulk density, compressive strength and thermal conductivity are 1.11 g/cm3, 3.5 MPa and 0.11 W/(m·K) to0.16 W/(m·K) (from 200 ℃ to 800 ℃), respectively.
