Abstract: The kaolinite/sodium acetate (K/NaAc) and kaolinite/potassium acetate (K/KAc) intercalation compound were prepared by grinding method. The intercalation compound was characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), simultaneous TG-DSC apparatus. And the effects of different cation on the intercalation results were studied. The results showed that the difference of K~+and Na~+ have a great impact on the intercalation results. Sodium acetate intercalation compound appears two diffraction peaks of 0.979 nm and 0.765 nm and formed a new bond between the kaolinite interlayer, compared with potassium acetate intercalation compound only one diffraction peak of 1.365 nm. Acetate molecules are upright in the kaolinite interlayer. And acetate cation and methyl may enter the hole in the tripartite complex.
